Chapel of
Madonna della Libera
It was founded by the Massa family in the 1300s and dedicated to Saint Mary of Liberation. As of 1888, it still belonged to the Massa family, while by 1921 it no longer had patrons.
The chapel has a small churchyard; inside, there is a marble altar topped by a 17th-century altarpiece depicting Our Lady of Liberation with Saints Lucy, Margaret, Francis of Paola, and Liborius the Bishop.
On the side walls, in oval frames, the souls in Purgatory are painted. According to legend, the Virgin Mary purifies the souls with drops of her milk falling from above.
On one of the side frescoes, Saint Antoninus is depicted, while on the opposite side there is Saint Francis Xavier.
The chapel houses a Latin document dated 1896, signed by Cardinal Gaetano Luigi Masella, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation, granting permission to celebrate solemn Masses on the last Sunday of July, the feast of Saint Mary of Liberation.
The statue was crowned on July 17, 1896.
